Gary Rowett is no longer Millwall manager. The club released a statement last night saying they’d parted company with their boss of four years. Here’s my take on the news and some thoughts on who might be next, let me know yours in the comments!!

    1. If I supported Millwall, my first instinct would be to hope for a "flashier" manager, but you are right, they may want to ease into a more open style. I forgot that Nathan Jones was available, maybe a solid choice?

    2. Wish Rowett all the best. I think he would've survived with a bolder approach to earlier subs, throwing on Esse and other attacking players, and moving on George Long sooner

    3. As a Preston fan looking in I see so many similarities to when Neil departed us. Many years of success on a very limited budget and continually knocking at the door of the Top 6 well above the clubs pay grade. However both cases involved styles that when it isnt workint can be a tricky watch and add in whats best described as tenures going 'stale' I think in both cases a rather unique 'mutual sacking' make and made compelte sense. Neil thrived elsewhere so will Rowett and he departs with a good reputation and Milwall in a very healthy spot. Makes compelte sense for all parties imo

    4. As a Millwall fan I’m happy he’s gone as the football is so dull and we took the trade off for the playoff push. But if we’re gonna play full football and lose then patience runs thin and the trade off isn’t worth it. I think we have the players to play exciting football (I.e flemming , esse , watmore) but all we want at the den is direct get stuck in and hard working football the fans can get behind. When that happens and the den is rocking it’s a hard place to go to

    5. Really good bloke GR, just had genuinely taken us as far as he could. Not that I’m not personally happy to stay in the Championship, the best league for week on week competition. GR did play to opponents strengths rather than believe in our ability. Wish him well elsewhere

    6. I feel ambivalent about GR leaving. It was a great to be looking up rather than down each season for a relatively small Championship club. By the football was dire too many times.

    7. Did pretty well with us but in the main, his football was unadventurous and tame, which doesn't go down well with us at The Den.
Wish him well and hopefully onwards n upwards for the mighty Lions!

    8. The timing is key here. A manager they want has suddenly become available which suggests that either Beale or Eustace have been lined up for the job.

    9. Good summary.

From afar I thought Rowett has done a steady job. probably ever so slightly over-achieved with less resources than many in the division.

Haven't seen nearly enough of his football to comment on the style, though.

If you were going to get rid, why not do it in the summer? As you say they now need to recruit and adjust quickly.

Wish Rowett all the best, a manager I'd happily have had at Hillsborough. Sounds like us under the Stuart Gray era.

And to use your example, McCarthy was pretty ugly football for sure, but we all know what happened once he left Ipswich. 😄

    10. I've seen this coming ever since the middle of last season.. Rowett had no clue about Millwall and the Millwall way.. he always set up the teams in wrong formations, always setting up to defensively.. the players we have at the club we should be doing better than we are.. the Board has to follow on John Berylsons Dream, and Rowetts football ways will end up sending us in the other direction he needed to go ..

For me I say Muscat as New Manager and Tim Cahill as his No2

      M.T.I.D
      C.O.Y.l
      N.O.L.U.W.D.C 🦁

    11. I wanted him gone boring football only to get beat again at was once a fortress. New blood on and off the pitch I would take staying up and hit it hard next season. Miiiiiiiiii

    12. Boring, soulless football designed to keep the club in the championship at all costs. The fans can take that for a while and and can see what the board are trying to achieve, and then it becomes demoralising . The board sat on their hands and put their head in the sand and ignored the fans growing protestations at what they were paying to watch . You get the feeling the board didn’t want to listen and were happy to carry on in this vain as that’s all that mattered . For me, the result against Blackburn at home, last game of the season should have been the time to fire Rowett, though nothing happened 🤷‍♂️…more of the same this season and here we are now. I’ve been to two games at home this season, you just feel apathetic in the end , nothing ever changes, the board can see what we see and they didn’t act. I feel relief he’s gone. Stoke and Derby fans saw it all very clearly and their respective boards acted accordingly without delay, I just wish our board had done the same.

    13. same old same old.they change the man in charge of the players hoping that that will turn things around. Board members are only interested in themselves. by getting the manager to resign saves them thousands in compensation. as I have said before the manager merry go round is in full swing. who's next?.

    14. what about the transition from heckingbottom to bielsa, that was another exception to the rule! lol, i think millwall might do a wednesday and appoint a youngish foreigner

    15. Very strange timing, though I am on the whole glad he has gone, he had taken us as far as he could and the football, particularly at home, had become tedious.
Going forward, it's not that we want someone to come in and get us moving the ball like a peak Barcelona, we just want to actually land some punches and have some intent at home especially.

    16. There are a couple other things to remember as well. If the wrong manager comes in and the results start to go south by Christmas, much of the talent at the club may be seeking a way out by January transfer window. Remember, Rowett recruited about 95 percent of the side.

    17. I really liked Rowett, we got some incredible players from him being in charge.
How ever, the times when he couldn’t break down lower teams in the division and the fact we lost to Blackburn 4-3 last game of the season. Just showed to me he ran out of plays in his book. Good luck Rowett and COYL

    18. Millwall fan here and I’m pretty gutted about Rowetts departure. I get he’s football wasn’t always exciting but with the results and league positioning with him in charge, he’s done brilliant. Before it was boom and bust. Who ever takes over, needs to be a step up.
      Good luck Rowett.

    19. I never wanted Rowett in charge Millwall he has always been clueless & boring I want Kevin Muscat as manager he will kick some ass 😂😂 cmon wall coyl 🦁 💙 Miiiiii Miiiiii

    20. We will see what happened. I think Rowett had enough of us & we had enough of him when it got difficult to watch.
He far more good than not but when he’s not it’s awful.
Kenny Jackett with the current crop of players would be interesting. 👍🏻 🦁

    21. He done a good job keeping us in the top half of the league but the football was poor especially with the talent we have. I never wanted him anyway but the last straw for me was the Blackburn game

    22. As a Millwall fan I feel shocked of Gary rowett leaving this club and he motivated the squad to get in the formation he did great help on that in my fair point we should play in the back 4 and the 5 a side to fit in the right formation in my opinion on John euastace he could solve the problems at Millwall he will help to motivate the squad to solve as a team as a head coach
